ADA: preventive treatments up, conservative down

A study by the American Dental Association (ADA) found that, while the number of dental-conserving treatments has decreased, screening and preventive treatments were gradually increasing every year.

The ADA Health Policy Institute found this after analyzing data from dental insurance claims over 18 years. These results were recently disclosed in a research report titled ‘Demand for Restorative Dental Care Varies by Patient Age’.

According to the report, from 2001 to 2018, the number of diagnostic and preventive treatments increased steadily, while the number of other treatments, including conservative treatments, decreased.

First of all, preventive treatment started with 25.2% in 2001, and is showing a slight increase overall, including 28.1% in 2005, 28.9% in 2009, 28.8% in 2014, and 28% in 2018. The number of dental check-ups was only 38.5% in 2001, but it has been increasing every year to 45.3% in 2005, 46.2% in 2009, 47.2% in 2014, and 47.3% in 2018.

Conservative treatment, on the other hand, was 21.6% in 2001, but gradually decreased over the years, decreasing by half to 15.2% in 2005, 14.2% in 2009, 12.3% in 2014, and 11.9% in 2018. Other treatment items also suffered from 14.7% in 2001, 11.3% in 2005, 10.8% in 2009, 11.7% in 2014, and 12.8% in 2018.

Conservative treatment types varied according to the patient’s age. Amalgam and resin were more common in adolescent patients, while crown, metal, and porcelain were most common in middle-aged patients.

In addition, it has been reported that conservative treatment usually begins at the age of two, peaks at the age of 11 to 12, and then decreases sharply and enters adulthood, entering a steady state.

Conservative treatment was found to peak in the mid-50s to early 60s. This is believed to be due to removable dentures and implants.
