Brazilian Lottery Winner Dies During Dental Implant Surgery

BRAZIL: A recent lottery winner, Antônio Lopes Siqueira, age 73, died during a dental implant procedure just weeks after winning a significant lottery prize of £26.5 million (201,963,763.26 BRL) in the Mega Sena lottery, according to reporting from the Daily Star.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 4, when Siqueira experienced a sudden medical emergency during the implant procedure. According to the Daily Star’s report, emergency services found him in cardiac arrest for over 30 minutes before transfer to a hospital, where medical staff were unable to revive him.

Medical History and Investigation

The report indicates that Siqueira had pre-existing conditions including hypertension and diabetes, which may have been contributing factors. Local law enforcement is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. Police Chief Edison Pick stated to local media: “If it was a sudden illness, the clinic is not to blame. We now need to wait for the post-mortem and the report to clarify what actually happened.”

Prior to his lottery win, Siqueira worked as a cattle rancher in Mato Grosso, west of Brasilia, where he was involved in livestock trading. The father of four had only recently won the lottery in November 2024, having purchased his winning ticket for just 66 pence.

Plans for the Winnings

According to sources close to the family quoted in the Daily Star, Siqueira was still in the early stages of planning how to use his winnings. As reported by a family source: “He was still figuring out what he was going to do. He didn’t have time to enjoy it.” The dental treatment was among his first decisions for utilizing the prize money, with future plans potentially including a house purchase.

The dental clinic and practitioner involved in the procedure are currently under investigation. At the time of his passing, Siqueira had been undergoing dental treatment for approximately one week, as reported in the Daily Star article.
