Concerns Surrounding Mental Wellbeing in UK Dental Professionals

UK: A recent survey conducted by Dental Protection, involving 1,300 dental professionals in the UK, has revealed deeply concerning mental wellbeing challenges faced by dental hygienists, therapists, and nurses.

The survey findings underscore the immense strain placed on the dental workforce and the impact of the pandemic on their mental health.

Widespread Concerns and Pessimism

The survey uncovered startling statistics, with over a third of dental hygienists and therapists contemplating their future within the dental profession, primarily due to their mental health concerns. Furthermore, the same holds true for nearly half of dental nurses, with 40% expressing pessimism about their future in the field.

Participants in the survey shared poignant insights into the challenges they are grappling with. A dental nurse expressed that the pressure on dental teams over the past year has been overwhelming. The media’s negative portrayal of their efforts to provide care for patients has added to their distress, casting a shadow on their commitment to patient well-being.

Another dental nurse conveyed feelings of being overwhelmed by the relentless demand to meet both patient and clinician expectations, all while coping with limited support and time.

Dentistry’s Pandemic Aftermath

A dental hygienist participating in the survey, who is nearing retirement at 58, expressed mixed sentiments about the future. While patients had initially shown understanding, the frustration stemming from a lack of available appointments and decreased patient patience is beginning to take a toll. The post-pandemic environment in dental practices has witnessed a perceptible shift in atmosphere.

Call for Support and Wellbeing

Dr. Yvonne Shaw, Deputy Dental Director at Dental Protection, commented on the survey’s findings, acknowledging the exceptionally challenging period that dentistry has endured during the pandemic. Dr. Shaw expressed deep concern that so many dental professionals who heroically faced the pandemic’s challenges now find their mental wellbeing in a worse state.

To address these critical concerns, Dr. Shaw emphasised that it is incumbent on the entire dental community to rally around dental professionals, providing support to restore optimism and a sense of purpose within the profession. She pointed out that many practices extended wellbeing support to dental teams during the pandemic, and she urged the continuation of such initiatives wherever feasible.

Furthermore, Dr. Shaw encouraged members grappling with mental wellbeing concerns to make use of Dental Protection’s 24/7 counselling service and other wellbeing support, available as a membership benefit. This confidential service, provided through a third-party partner, offers crucial assistance to dental professionals navigating the challenges and distress associated with their roles. It serves as a lifeline for those in need of emotional support and guidance during these trying times.
