Thailand: The Dental Institute at the Department of Medicine has issued a warning against dentists and non-registered clinics that peddle illegal dental veneers as posing serious dental health risks.
The statement is issued by Dr Nuttaphong Wongwiwat, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, who is warning the public about the health risks associated with visiting underground establishments that offer dental veneer treatments to correct gaps, small teeth, chipped teeth, slightly crooked teeth, and unevenly coloured teeth.
Only a qualified dentist dental that takes the necessary pre-treatment assessment to determine a suitable patient candidate, and who uses sterilised equipment, is able to provide a successful veneering treatment, the healthcare official warns.
The veneers must also be placed using medically approved instruments and bonding agents that meet prevailing medical standards.
It has been noted that such illegal services tend to target students who are motivated by the cheaper service fees.
Dr Sumana Phosritong, M.D., Specialist Dentist Acting for the Director of the Dental Institute added that the illegal veneers pose long-term detrimental effects on teeth and oral health.
Potential hazards include the risks of: Tooth decay, gingivitis, recessed gums, bad breath, and food particles that easily get lodged in between tooth gaps. If the unsterilized devices were to poke the soft tissues of the gum, it can also cause infections and oral ulcers, says the warning.
