Dentists Launch Xylitol-Based Oral Care Brand in Malaysia

Key Takeaways:

  • Dr. Hadi and Dr. Amira, dentists from Dental Duo Clinic, launched Rechew, a xylitol-based oral care brand.
  • Xylitol targets harmful bacteria, reduces plaque, and stimulates saliva production but is underutilized in Malaysia.
  • Rechew pastilles are designed for cavity-prone individuals and children as young as 2 years old.
  • The product is available online and at their clinic, with plans to expand to drugstores and neighboring countries.
  • The founders emphasize education and research to stay competitive in oral care science.

A Curious Observation in the Dental Chair

Dr. Hadi and Dr. Amira, a dentist couple based in Malaysia, have spent years treating patients at their practice, Dental Duo Clinic. Despite their extensive experience, they began noticing an intriguing pattern seven years into their careers: some patients with impeccable oral hygiene still developed cavities, while others with less disciplined habits maintained healthy teeth.

“Some people are just more prone to cavities than others but why? We have patients coming in frustrated that they’ve done everything their dentist advises but still get cavities,” Dr. Amira mused in an article published on Vulcan Post.

This observation highlighted a gap in conventional oral care advice, which often revolves around brushing and flossing. Recognizing the need for a better solution, the couple embarked on a journey to rethink oral care, eventually leading to the creation of Rechew, a xylitol-based oral care brand.

The Science Behind Xylitol

The foundation of Rechew lies in xylitol, a natural sugar alcohol that has been used in Europe for oral care since the 1970s. While xylitol is relatively rare in Malaysia, its benefits are well-documented. According to Dr. Amira, “Xylitol selectively targets the bad bacteria that’s responsible for various sorts of problems in the mouth, reduces plaque build-up, and stimulates saliva production which helps hydrate dry mouth, reduce bad breath, and repair and protect the enamel.”

Despite its advantages, xylitol remains underutilized due to cost constraints. Many products include only trace amounts of xylitol to keep prices low while still marketing it as a key ingredient. Dr. Amira clarified that such minimal inclusion may not provide enough xylitol to improve oral health. Research suggests a daily intake of 6g to 8g, spread throughout the day, for optimal results.

However, there are caveats. High doses of xylitol can cause digestive discomfort, and it is toxic to dogs. “And one important note, it’s toxic to dogs so those with dogs need to make sure to keep it away,” Dr. Amira reminded readers.

Developing a Smarter Oral Care Solution

Empowered by their expertise, Dr. Hadi and Dr. Amira decided to create their own xylitol-based chewables. Their goal was not merely to launch another product but to offer a smarter approach to dental health. “It wasn’t just about launching a product, it was about offering a smarter, more effective way to support dental health,” they explained.

Their initial attempts involved collaborations with local pharmaceutical labs and confectionery manufacturers, but early prototypes fell short in taste, texture, and appeal. Undeterred, they partnered with a pharmaceutical lab in China, leveraging its state-of-the-art facilities to develop their ideal xylitol pastilles within five months.

While imitation products are nearly impossible to prevent, Rechew focuses on building a strong brand identity. “We’re always researching and studying new research papers to stay at the forefront of oral care science,” they added.

Targeting Cavity-Prone Individuals and Families

Rechew’s xylitol pastilles are designed for anyone concerned about their oral health, particularly those prone to cavities. The product also appeals to parents seeking safe oral care options for their children. Unlike chewing gums, Rechew pastilles are hard candy-like, making them suitable for kids as young as 2 years old.

Rather than positioning the pastilles as a candy alternative, the founders emphasize their role as an addition to regular brushing and flossing. Available in three flavors, the products can be purchased online via TikTok Shop and Shopee, as well as at Dental Duo Clinic. They are also halal-certified by SHC, a certification body recognized by JAKIM.

“The reception has been incredible,” Dr. Amira shared. “It truly exceeded our expectations. We were surprised to see that many Malaysians already know a little about xylitol and its benefits in oral health, which helped us gain traction quickly.”

Expanding the Mission Beyond the Clinic

Balancing full-time dental practice with managing a retail brand may seem challenging, but Dr. Hadi and Dr. Amira view Rechew as a natural extension of their commitment to preventive oral health. “Our clinical work informs our decisions, and we set aside dedicated time to nurture the brand,” Dr. Amira explained.

Ultimately, both their clinic and Rechew share the same mission: “At the end of the day, both our dental practice and Rechew share the same mission: to help people achieve healthier, happier smiles.”

Looking ahead, the team aims to expand Rechew’s availability to drugstores nationwide and eventually extend their reach into neighboring countries. By combining their clinical expertise with innovative solutions, Dr. Hadi and Dr. Amira hope to redefine oral care practices across the region.
