Google Launches Healthcare ChatBot

USA: Google Research and DeepMind have introduced MedPaLM, an open-sourced large language model for medical purposes, in response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is a language model that utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI). It has been trained using an enormous corpus of text sourced from the web, allowing it to produce responses that imitate human-like responses to a wide range of questions and requests. ChatGPT can be utilised for diverse natural language processing assignments, including text completion, text creation and conversing.

The model is benchmarked on MultiMedQA, an open-source medical question-answering benchmark that combines HealthSearchQA, a new free-response dataset of medical questions sought online, with six existing open-question answering datasets.

MedPaLM’s Datasets and Performance

MedPaLM provides datasets for multiple-choice questions and for longer responses to questions posed by medical professionals and non-professionals.

The researchers developed the model on PaLM, a 540 billion parameter LLM, and its instruction-tuned variation Flan-PaLM. Flan-PaLM achieves SOTA performance on various clinical topics datasets but human evaluation identifies significant gaps in its responses.

Med-PaLM was developed to address this issue, and a group of doctors determined that 92.6% of its responses were on par with clinician-generated answers.

Google’s Healthcare Ventures

Google has announced a collaboration with Apollo Hospitals in India to improve the use of deep learning models in x-rays and other diagnostic purposes.

The tech giant has also formed partnerships with Aravind Eye Care System, Ascension, Mayo Clinic, and other healthcare organizations. Microsoft is also working with the OpenAI team to employ GPT-3 for improving healthcare teams’ efficiency.

In November 2022, Meta AI introduced Galactica, an AI-generated program that claimed to support academic researchers by generating comprehensive literature reviews. However, it failed due to unreliable results.

Meta AI also released CICERO, an AI agent that performed at a human level in the complex natural language game “Diplomacy.”
