As we enter the final quarter of 2023, amidst the ongoing turmoil and unrest dominating the news, it becomes imperative to pause and reflect on the ideals that bind humanity together, transcending the borders that seek to divide us. It is within this context that we find refuge in an event of global significance, which extends an exemplar invitation for unity, learning, and progression — the FDI World Dental Congress.

The recent FDI-WDC 2023 held in Sydney provided a remarkable forum for unity in a time when the dental world yearned for it the most – the first such Congress since the onset of the Covid pandemic. The Scientific Programme, a pillar of this extraordinary event, unveiled a tapestry of knowledge and challenges – reminding us that in the dental orbit, common goals unite us more profoundly than any divisions could separate.

With over 200 hours of insightful presentations from industry luminaries, the program offered a panoramic view of the evolving dental landscape. I had the privilege of engaging with some of the world’s foremost experts who graced the event. They generously shared their insights, knowledge, and wisdom, illuminating the most pressing issues that resonate at the core of the dental profession. 

These conversations, documented in our article here, serve as a testament to the unity and purpose that underpin the dental community. In the words of Prof Ivan Darby, who spoke on the nexus between periodontitis and mental health, we are reminded that dentistry touches not only teeth but the very core of human well-being.

In these trying times, let us draw inspiration from the spirit of unity that emanated from the FDI World Dental Congress, emulating the collective ethos in addressing the broader challenges confronting our world. As we look towards the future, may this spirit of unity continue to guide us in fostering a global landscape of mutual understanding, progress, and shared prosperity.
