INDIA: Dr. MC Sudhakar, the Higher Education Minister of Karnataka, issued a warning on December 22, expressing concern about the diminishing quality of research in universities and the proliferation of institutions solely focused on conferring degrees. The minister highlighted the impact of private universities’ indiscipline in evaluation, characterizing it as a situation where ‘big fish are eating small fish.’
Challenges in the Education System
Speaking at a national conference organized by COMED-K and the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI), Minister Sudhakar addressed the challenges within the current education system.
He acknowledged a shortage of faculty not only in government colleges but also in private institutions, emphasizing the need for both sectors to uphold educational standards.
The minister stressed the importance of private universities maintaining their standards and avoiding the dilution of education quality. He noted a trend where private universities compromise on education and examinations in a bid to compete with each other. Sudhakar revealed that the department has received complaints about the type of evaluations conducted, prompting the call for high standards.
Common Platform for Exams and Upgrading Government Colleges
To address the concerns, Sudhakar suggested that private universities adopt a common platform for conducting exams, discouraging individual testing solely for boasting about high pass percentages.
Additionally, he emphasized the need to upgrade government engineering colleges, with a focus on enhancing faculty and infrastructure. The directive to department officials is aimed at integrating internship opportunities for students to better prepare them for the industry.
Concluding his remarks, Minister Sudhakar underscored the importance of skill development, stating that it is the need of the hour. He also touched upon the implementation of the State Education Policy, emphasizing a forward-looking approach and critiquing the previous government’s lack of vision in crafting the National Education Policy.
The minister affirmed that Karnataka would approach educational policies with foresight and strategic planning.
