University of Tokyo Leads Japanese Institutions with a Notable Leap in Rankings

JAPAN: Japanese universities have made significant strides in the 2024 Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, with several institutions moving up the global ladder. The University of Tokyo, a leading Japanese academic institution, claimed the top spot among Japanese universities, marking an impressive jump from 39th place in the previous year to 29th in the 2024 rankings. Japanese Institutions Rise in Global Standing

In addition to the University of Tokyo’s achievement, Kyoto University secured the second position among Japanese universities, climbing to 55th place in the 2024 rankings from 68th in the prior year. These developments reflect a positive trend in Japan’s higher education sector. Former Imperial Universities Lead the Way

Among the top-ranking Japanese institutions, the top four are former imperial universities. These institutions have a long history of academic excellence and have continued to thrive on the global stage. One of the factors contributing to the improved rankings of Japanese universities is a revision of the performance indicators used for evaluation. The addition of patents as a new metric has played a significant role in shaping the rankings. This shift towards recognising the impact of academic research and innovation has had a positive influence on Japanese universities’ positions on the global stage.
