K Pharmaceuticals Introduces Aquoral Oral Spray to Offer Long-lasting Relief for Dry Mouth

K Pharmaceuticals has announced the launch of Aquoral, an oral spray designed to alleviate the symptoms of dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. Dry mouth is a prevalent condition that can cause discomfort and pain, affecting vital functions such as chewing, tasting, swallowing, and speaking. The condition can arise from various factors, including diseases, medication side effects, or other underlying causes.

Lipid-Based Solution

Aquoral is a lipid-based solution that closely resembles human saliva, specifically formulated to moisten and lubricate the oral cavity, says the company. By forming a lipid film, Aquoral is said to limit the loss of water, restore the viscoelasticity of the oral mucosa, and provide a protective action against further inflammation. Managing dry mouth primarily focuses on symptom relief, considering the detrimental effects it can have on oral health and overall quality of life.

“As a pharmacist who specializes in oral medicine, I know that many prescriptions and over-the-counter medications can cause xerostomia, which may negatively affect daily living activities and also result in serious oral health issues,” said Thomas Viola, RPh, CCP. “It has been my experience that lipid-based therapies, such as Aquoral, are superior to water-based formulas in helping to prevent oral disease and provide long-lasting relief.”

The active ingredient in Aquoral is Oxidized Glycerol Triester (OGT), produced through a controlled oxidation process of corn oil. This patented technology, enables the OGT to bond with the mucous membranes, creating a protective film that covers the entire oral cavity, says a press release. Previously available only to dentists as Xerostomia Relief Spray, Aquoral can now be prescribed by all healthcare professionals licensed to do so.

Key Features and Benefits of Aquoral

Prevention: By preventing mucosal damage and tooth decay, Aquoral reportedly improves the ability to chew, taste, swallow, and speak, enhancing overall oral health.

Fast-acting and Long-lasting: Two quick sprays of Aquoral offer relief that can last for up to 4-6 hours, reducing the need for frequent dosing and enhancing convenience.

Easy to Use: Aquoral’s compact size allows it to fit in a pocket or purse, eliminating the need for mixing or frequent rinsing, which is common with water-based formulations.

According to K Pharmaceuticals, 92% of patients experienced an improvement in their Dry Mouth symptoms after using Aquoral.

Significance of Addressing Dry Mouth

Sheryl Riley, RN, OCN, CMCN, Founding Partner of Clarion LLC, a firm specializing in oncology care management, emphasized the significance of addressing dry mouth, particularly in cancer patients.

“Dry mouth is an under-reported but important condition that can lead to serious complications, especially in cancer patients. Over-the-counter remedies provide temporary relief but do not protect the oral cavity,” said Riley. “Aquoral forms a long-lasting protective barrier over the entire mouth, reducing moisture loss and maintaining the patient’s comfort and quality of life.”

Aquoral is available only by prescription, offering what is said to be an effective and long-lasting solution for individuals experiencing the debilitating effects of Dry Mouth.
