KDA includes ‘head and neck’ in scope of dentistry

The Korean Dental Association (KDA) has synthesized the opinions of academia and decided to include ‘head and neck’ in the scope of dentistry.

The 4th regular board meeting of the KDA held on 25 March tentatively concluded that the scope of dentistry should be defined as “a study that conducts medical research on teeth, periodontal tissue, oral structures, jawbone, temporomandibular joint face, and surrounding structures such as the head and neck connected thereto”.

The tentative decision was made following KDA’s gathering of opinions from 49 academic organizations and dental schools related to dentistry that obtained at least 85% of the broad consensus.

There was also a discussion about the scope of the dentist’s work. Similarly, the KDA undertook two opinion inquiries, and the scope of work was summarized as “research based on the definition of dentistry, medical practice and duties as a medical professional”.

KDA is planning to put the new consensus on the agenda for the next regular general meeting to be held in April. After enactment, the contents will be included in dental textbooks and advertised so that they can be posted on the website of each institution.

In addition, the board of directors discussed the publication and distribution of a revised edition of the dental glossary, which is updated for the first time in 16 years.

A total of 22 agenda items were discussed and decided on at the general meeting, including: revision of the articles of association; revision of regulations for accreditation of the society; enactment of detailed rules regarding the application for approval of the society; selection of winners of the Yeonsong Dental Award; and establishment of the Korean Dental Association dental award.
