Philippines Launches Congress to Boost Healthcare Tourism

The Philippines has launched its inaugural International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress (IHWTC) at Manila’s Grand Hyatt. The event, which attracted delegates from 38 countries, marks a decisive step in the nation’s ambition to become a leading healthcare destination in the Asia-Pacific region.

Strategic Advantage in Medical Tourism Rankings

The Philippines’ growing prominence in medical tourism is already evident in global rankings. According to Paulo Tugbang, DOT Director for Product Development, “In the Medical Tourism Index published by the Medical Tourism Association… we’re actually number 24 globally, and number 3 in the ASEAN region.” This positioning reflects the country’s competitive advantage in providing quality healthcare services.

Comprehensive Infrastructure Development

The Department of Tourism (DOT), under Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco’s leadership, is implementing an extensive accreditation program for healthcare facilities, including dental clinics, to ensure compliance with international standards. The initiative is part of the National Tourism Development Plan 2022-2028, which aims to enhance healthcare accessibility while maintaining world-class service delivery.

Cultural Integration in Healthcare Delivery

A distinctive feature of the Philippines’ medical tourism offering is its integration of traditional wellness practices with modern healthcare. Secretary Frasco emphasized the Filipino concept of “malasakit” (compassionate care), noting that Filipinos possess “the inherent quality to exercise genuine care and compassion, always willing to go the extra mile to put the needs of others above one’s own.”

Industry Expert Perspectives

Agora Group CEO Hadi Malaeb highlighted the country’s competitive advantages, stating, “The Philippines, with its unique combination of highly skilled healthcare professionals, competitive pricing, and natural beauty, stands on the brink of becoming a major player in this dynamic sector.” He emphasized the need to strengthen five key areas: infrastructure, accreditation, talent development, holistic wellness experiences, and public-private partnerships.

Enhanced Tourist Support Services

To improve the experience for medical tourists, the DOT has introduced several practical initiatives, including a Medical Tourism Concierge service at Manila’s international airports and Tourist First Aid Facilities in popular destinations such as Boracay, Panglao, Siargao, and El Nido. These services aim to provide seamless assistance to medical tourists throughout their stay.

Government Backing and Future Prospects

The initiative has received strong support from the current administration, with Tourism Secretary Frasco acknowledging President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s commitment to advancing healthcare and tourism infrastructure. “Tourism is a pillar of national development under President Marcos’s administration. By focusing on health and wellness tourism, we are not only attracting visitors from around the world but also ensuring that our citizens reap the benefits of improved healthcare and economic opportunities,” she stated.
