Pulpdent Introduces Next-Gen Bulk-Fill Restorative Material

ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow Marks Pulpdent’s First Major Product Release in 4 Years

Pulpdent Corporation has introduced ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow, a next-generation dental restorative material that aims to elevate the standard of care for bulk-fill procedures. This product marks a significant expansion of Pulpdent’s ACTIVA line and represents the company’s first major release in four years.

Innovations in Material Design

ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow is designed to support natural remineralization processes, defend against secondary caries, and deliver optimal esthetics through ShadeFusion™ universal shade matching technology. It also offers unique protection against shrinkage stress and wear, thanks to its patented MODULUS™ stress-reducing monomer. The material’s self-leveling properties and unlimited depth of cure allow for a true one-step bulk-fill solution without the need for a capping layer, enhancing both patient care and practice efficiency.

Michael Jeffery, Director of Product and Strategy at Pulpdent, highlighted the product’s significance: “ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow is an exciting step forward, both for dentistry and our company. We believe it ushers in a new, higher standard of care for dental patients worldwide. This product provides immediate cost-saving efficiencies and simplifies Class II procedures, which are common yet challenging treatments in dental practices today.”

Addressing Traditional Bulk-fill Challenges

Traditional bulk-fill materials have faced challenges with photopolymerization, shrinkage stress, and susceptibility to microleakage, bacterial incursion, and restorative failure. ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow was developed with these limitations in mind, incorporating features to address each shortcoming directly. Independent testing demonstrates that the material provides superior protection against microleakage, volume wear, and shrinkage stress, surpassing existing standards for top-tier restorative materials.

“The development of ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow is a natural expansion of our ACTIVA research,” said Lew Berk, Pulpdent Managing Director. “It addresses critical pain points for dentists and reflects our mission to empower them with higher standards of care and new practice efficiencies. ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow not only complements our existing line but also offers a novel material choice that meets the evolving needs of dental practitioners.”

Pediatric Dentistry Applications

For pediatric dentistry, ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow is available in a special formulation, ACTIVA KIDS BioACTIVE Bulk Flow. This version offers the same properties as the standard ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow but includes options tailored for primary dentition. It comes in two esthetic shades—universal for general use and opaque white for when visible restoration margins are desired. Like its adult counterpart, ACTIVA KIDS BioACTIVE Bulk Flow is free from BPA, bis-GMA, and BPA derivatives.

“The introduction of ACTIVA KIDS BioACTIVE Bulk Flow reflects our commitment to providing safe, effective, and esthetic dental materials for young patients,” Berk added. “This product aligns with our mission to help children maintain healthy smiles as they grow.”

Product Availability and Future Outlook

ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow was unveiled at the 2024 Greater New York Dental Meeting and will be available for pre-market ordering starting January 1, 2025. It comes in a 5g syringe with 10 Automix tips and will be distributed through Pulpdent’s global network of partners.

“We’re excited to see the product roll out and believe it will make a significant impact on dental practice worldwide,” said Jeffery. “With ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow, we are setting a new standard for bulk-fill dental restoratives and providing dentists with a reliable solution to meet the demands of modern dental care.”
