Saveetha Dental College surpasses Harvard in publishing

India: Saveetha Dental College in Chennai, India, has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the highest-publishing dental institution in the world.

The college has taken the top spot from Harvard University’s School of Dental Medicine, with 8,920 publications in Scopus, the world’s largest scientific database, as of March 2023.

This is a significant achievement for Saveetha Dental College, as it surpassed the total of 8,854 publications from Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Unique curriculum and collaboration lead to success

The college has a team of 75 researchers who have been working tirelessly to produce numerous publications in highly respected medical journals. Saveetha Dental College has a unique curriculum that places a strong emphasis on training students in research and publishing. Collaboration between researchers and students has been a key factor in achieving this feat.

NM Veeraiyan, chancellor of Saveetha University, attributed the college’s success to its focus on research training for undergraduate students. He said, “This achievement is a testament to India’s growing academic excellence.

Undergraduate research training key to success

In 2022, Saveetha Dental College published 12 papers in Lancet, one of the world’s highest-impact, peer-reviewed general medical journals. This achievement highlights the college’s commitment to producing quality research and contributing to the advancement of dental and medical science.

Dr Veeraiyan also highlighted the challenges that Indian institutions face in conducting research, including the need to pay a higher price for scientific instruments owing to multiple transfers and import duties. Despite these challenges, Dr Veeraiyan believes that it is still possible for Indian institutions to be global leaders in research publishing.

Dr Veeraiyan sees Saveetha Dental College’s achievement as a testament to India’s growing academic excellence. This achievement puts Indian dental research on the world stage, and demonstrates the country’s potential to be a global leader in research publishing.
