Torino, Italy: In the realm of endodontics, Italy boasts a rich history of knowledge exchange, professional growth, and academic excellence, thanks to the Italian Society of Endodontics (SIE). Established in October 1970, the SIE has evolved into a leading institution for dental professionals, nurturing their expertise and fostering a sense of community.

The Early Beginnings

The origins of SIE trace back to a group of visionary individuals, including Dr. Joseph Cozzani, Dr. Gianfranco Borsotti, Dr. Richard Garberoglio, Prof. Franco Mantero, Prof. Augusto Pecchioni, Dr. Vincenzo Spina, and Dr. Sergio Duillo. United by a passion for endodontics, they formed the Study Group of Endodontics in October 1970.

Their by-laws were clear: “The purpose of this group is to facilitate the individual components of the acquisition and enhancement of their knowledge through the exchange of views, experiences, information, and so on.”

Birth of SIE

By 1974, inspired by Prof. Augusto Pecchioni, the Study Group decided to evolve further and gave birth to the Italian Society of Endodontics. Today, it stands as the largest endodontic society in Europe in terms of the number of subscribers, with more than eight hundred members distributed across Italy.

Diverse Membership

SIE members are classified into two categories: Ordinary and Active. To attain the status of an active member, one must hold at least three years of membership and exhibit a keen interest in endodontics. To earn this recognition:

Present ten clinical cases meeting excellence and scientific validity criteria.

Have cases reviewed and evaluated by the Commission Member Acceptance.

Achieving Active Member status is a testament to a member’s professionalism and serves as a significant incentive for continued growth and the application of modern endodontic techniques.

Meeting of Academia and Practice

SIE plays a pivotal role in bridging the worlds of academia and professional practice. It serves as a platform where universities and the dental profession converge, facilitating the exchange of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise.

Promoting Endodontics Across Italy

SIE’s influence extends throughout Italy, with regional sections actively engaging in cultural activities and promoting the love and interest in endodontics, especially among young dental enthusiasts.

The society is also the official publisher of the Italian Journal of Endodontics, known for its rich content and exceptional graphics. This publication holds a prominent place in the international arena and is available for free download on the SIE website.

Annual SIE Congress

A highly anticipated event on the SIE calendar is the “SIE National Congress.” This annual gathering brings together professionals, dentists, university professors, and students for a unique opportunity to interact with industry-leading scholars. The congress typically features theoretical and practical Refresher Courses that consistently draw substantial interest and participation.

As the dental community eagerly awaits the next SIE Congress, it’s clear that this society remains dedicated to advancing the field of endodontics through knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the pursuit of excellence.
