Study: Denture wearers at risk of malnutrition

Researchers from the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University School of Dentistry have released a study that links the wearing of dentures to dietary and nutritional changes.

Using electronic and physical patient records, the scientists analyzed and monitored the influence that oral health treatments have over the overall health and wellbeing of dental patients. According to the research team, this is the first study to link lab values of nutritional biomarkers to patient dental records.

More than 10,000 dental records were analyzed, with the scientists matching the dental data with medical laboratory records looking for various signs of malnutrition. The various lab tests conducted as part of the research include: Basic metabolic profile; lipid and thyroid panel tests; complete blood count, among others. The scientists compared the lab results obtained two years prior to and after getting dentures.

According to the study, the denture wearers displayed significant deterioration across various nutrition markers over a two-year study period. The non-denture wearers, on the other hand, did not experience any decline.

Although the researchers would classify the denture wearers could as being “normal” on the malnutrition scale, they warn of the possibility that their nutritional levels may continue to deteriorate over time.
