Saveetha Institute Retains Top Position
The Education Ministry has unveiled the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 rankings for dental colleges in India. For the third consecutive year, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai, has secured the top position in the dental category. This achievement builds on the institution’s strong performance in recent years, having ranked 3rd and 4th in 2021 and 2020, respectively.
Top Contenders and Notable Shifts
Following closely behind Saveetha Institute are some of India’s most prestigious dental education institutions. Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal, maintained its second-place ranking from the previous year. Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences and King George’s Medical University rounded out the top four.
One of the most significant changes in this year’s rankings was the rise of Jamia Millia Islamia. The institution, which entered the top 10 for the first time last year, has now climbed to the 8th position. This marks a remarkable improvement from its 16th place ranking in 2022 and 20th place in 2021.
Private Institutions Make Their Mark
The rankings highlight the strong performance of private institutions in dental education. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth secured the 5th position, while A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences and SRM Dental College also featured in the top 10.
Notably, Manipal College of Dental Sciences has maintained its status as a leading private institution in the field. An official statement noted, “Manipal has been ranking second consecutively for 2 years. Additionally, it is the first private dental medical college in India to make the list in 2022 and 2023.”
Methodology and Importance of NIRF Rankings
The NIRF rankings are based on a comprehensive evaluation of various parameters, including teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
These rankings play a crucial role in guiding prospective students in their choice of dental colleges and help institutions benchmark their performance against peers. They also serve as a valuable tool for policymakers and educational administrators in assessing the quality of dental education across the country.
