DCI team mulls establishing Tripura dental college

India: An official delegation of the Dental Council of India (DCI) visited Tripura, a state in northeastern India, for an inspection with a view to establish a new dental college in the capital city.

Hurdles and problems

In his address during the Foundation Day programme of Agartala Government Medical College held at the Medical College and GBP Hospital in Agartala city, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha (pictured), who led the delegation, spoke of the challenges to set up the new school.

“We are acutely aware of the problems involved in opening a dental college. I myself went to DCI’s conference this time, and they welcomed me. They said there is no dentist chief minister in the history of India,” said the minister.

“Despite hurdles and problems, we are confident that the Dental College will be set up here”, he added.

Permanent location found

A location for the Dental College has been identified – opposite to Shyamalima Apartments near ILS hospitals, Agartala. However, the school will open its doors at the a temporary location at the new building of IGM Hospital.

Members of the DCI have already completed the inspection, studied the necessary documents and obtained the proposed list of faculties.

According to Dr Sajal Nath, the Secretary of the Indian Dental Association (IDA), Tripura State Branch, the inspection delegation would soon compile and submit a report to the DCI committee for a final call to be made on the decision.
