4 in 10 Korean adults’ dental needs unmet

Among Korean adults over the age of 19, the proportion of those who needed dental treatment (examination and treatment) but did not receive it was found to be about 4 out of 10.

The Korean National Statistical Office announced the finding as part of its ‘2021 Korea Social Indicators’ results, taken from a survey on the annual unmet medical care rate.

According to the Office, the proportion of people who needed treatment but did not receive it in 2021 was the highest figure recorded since 2016. Past-year survey results were: 32.6% in 2016, 30.8% in 2017, 31.9% in 2018, 30.9% in 2019, and 39.8% in 2020.

According to the published social indicators, in 2020, the proportion of those who needed medical treatment but did not receive it was 7.1%, and the proportion of those who needed dental treatment but did not receive it was 39.8%.

The lower the income level, the higher the unmet medical care rate. As a result of examining the quintiles divided by monthly equivalised household income, the dental unmet medical care rate gradually increased in the order of the lower class (47.1%), the lower middle class (44.7%), the middle class (41.6%), the upper middle class (36.2%), and the upper class (30.6%).
