A recent study published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences has unveiled a significant advancement in the field of forensic dentistry. Researchers in Brazil have developed a machine learning system capable of determining an individual’s sex from panoramic dental X-rays with remarkable accuracy.
The study, led by Ana Claudia Martins Ciconelle and her colleagues, utilized two types of machine learning algorithms: a convolutional neural network and a residual network. These algorithms were trained on a vast dataset of 207,946 panoramic radiographs collected from 15 clinical centers in São Paulo, Brazil.
Impressive Accuracy Rates
The results of the study are noteworthy, with the AI system achieving an overall accuracy of 96% for individuals over 16 years of age. As reported by Hedrih, “For patients between 20 and 50 years of age, the accuracy of the system was over 97%.” However, the accuracy varied depending on age groups, with slightly lower rates for older individuals and significantly lower rates for young children.
The researchers identified two primary factors affecting the system’s accuracy:
- Image resolution: Higher resolution images yielded better results.
- Age of the individual: Accuracy was highest for adults between 20 and 50 years old
Potential Applications in Forensic Science
This breakthrough could have significant implications for forensic investigations, particularly in cases where only dental remains are available. As the article notes, “Forensic methods that extract the needed information from bones are particularly important because bones are often the best-preserved part of a body.”
While the results are promising, it’s important to note that the study was conducted using X-rays from living individuals. The researchers acknowledge that further investigation is needed to determine the system’s effectiveness when applied to human remains in various states of decomposition.

Conclusion
The study authors concluded, “This study demonstrates the effectiveness of an AI-driven tool for sex determination using PR [panoramic radiographs] and emphasizes the role of image resolution, age, and sex in determining the algorithm’s performance.” This development represents a significant step forward in the application of AI to forensic dentistry, potentially offering faster and more accurate sex determination in forensic investigations.
