BMDC Undergoes Leadership Restructuring

Regulatory Body Reconstitution Marks New Chapter in Healthcare Governance

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), the nation’s premier regulatory authority for medical practitioners, has entered a new phase of leadership following its recent reconstitution, as reported by Bangladesh Post. The restructuring, announced through a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare notification on October 20, represents a significant development in the country’s healthcare administration landscape.

New Leadership Takes the Helm

In a pivotal first meeting held on October 23, the newly reconstituted council appointed its key leadership positions. Professor Saiful Islam, who previously served as a Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), emerged as the elected president. The meeting also saw the appointment of a vice president and treasurer, along with the formation of various committees in accordance with the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act, 2010.

High-Level Discussions with Health Ministry

Following the committee formations, a significant meeting took place at 3 pm between the council members and Health Adviser Noorjahan Begum at the Ministry of Health. The session focused on crucial aspects of healthcare service improvement and medical education quality.

During these discussions, Health Adviser Noorjahan Begum emphasized two critical priorities for the council. First, she stressed the importance of expediting the resolution of complaints regarding BMDC’s medical services. Additionally, she called for enhanced measures to maintain high standards in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, with the ultimate goal of ensuring superior healthcare delivery to the public.

Notable Attendance and Future Implications

The meeting saw participation from several key healthcare officials, including Dr. Mohammad Sarwar Bari, Secretary of the Health Education and Family Welfare Division, and Professor Dr. Abu Jafar, Acting Director General of the DGHS. Also present were BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Syedur Rahman, alongside other ministry officials and members of the newly reconstituted council.

The reconstitution of the BMDC marks a significant step in Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare regulatory framework and improve medical service standards across the country.
