Call for Improved Gum Health in Malaysia

MALAYSIA: A nationwide campaign, #GumHealthFirst, has been launched to address the staggering prevalence of gum disease among Malaysian adults. According to the National Oral Health Survey of Adults 2020, an alarming 94.5% of Malaysian adults suffer from unhealthy gums, with the issue being even more pronounced among those aged 35 to 44, where a staggering 96% face gum health challenges.

“Gum disease, a silent yet pervasive threat, has entrenched itself within our society. The implication of this epidemic is profound, extending far beyond oral health alone,” remarked Dr Noormi Othman, Principal Director of Oral Health at the Health Ministry (KKM).

The survey also revealed that a severe form of gum disease, periodontitis, affects 38.2% of Malaysian adults, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

A Multifaceted Approach

The #GumHealthFirst campaign is a collaborative effort between Systema, a renowned Japanese gum protection expert, the Malaysia Society of Periodontology (MSP), and the Health Ministry (KKM). This initiative aims to raise awareness about the critical role healthy gums play in overall oral wellness and empower Malaysians with knowledge and tools to prioritize gum health.

“These statistics shed light on the current state of gum health among Malaysians, prompting us to confront a stark reality: despite advancements in oral care, many individuals are still neglecting their gum health,” said Tomotaka Oka, Managing Director of Southern Lion, the company behind Systema.

Innovative Solutions and Preventive Measures

Systema’s innovative toothbrushes, featuring the new and improved SlimTech™ technology and the renowned soft 0.02mm super tapered bristles, are at the forefront of this initiative. These advanced toothbrushes, coupled with Systema’s gum protection toothpaste, offer a comprehensive solution to prevent bacterial buildup and gum discomfort.

“Preventing gum disease starts with simple yet crucial habits. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and avoiding tobacco products are essential steps in maintaining optimal gum health,” emphasized Dr Mohd Faizal Hafez Hidayat, President of the Malaysian Society of Periodontology (MSP).

Holistic Well-being at Stake

The campaign also highlights the far-reaching implications of gum disease, extending beyond oral health. Dr Faizal emphasized that untreated gum disease can spiral into serious health conditions like osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, respiratory issues, stroke, and diabetes, underscoring the crucial link between oral health and overall well-being.

“Unhealthy gums are more than just an impact to one’s oral health. They can lead to serious issues like tooth loss and difficulties in everyday activities such as chewing and speaking,” Dr Faizal cautioned.

Empowering the Public

In addition to raising awareness, Systema has introduced a revamped gum health portal, allowing Malaysians to digitally assess their gum health and obtain valuable insights, tips, and tools for maintaining optimal gum and overall oral health. Furthermore, a mobile dental clinic, in collaboration with Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), will offer free gum health assessments across Peninsular Malaysia throughout May and June.

As the #GumHealthFirst campaign gains momentum, it represents a crucial step towards addressing a pressing public health concern and fostering a healthier, more aware Malaysian population.
