Canadian Paediatric Dentist Suspended for Improper Conduct with Staff member

CANADA: Dr. Sukrit Grewal, a paediatric dentist in Abbotsford, has been suspended from practice for six months after admitting to improper conduct involving the “improper touching” of a female staff member. The BC College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP) made the consent agreement public on December 1, detailing the disciplinary actions taken against Dr. Grewal.

Suspension Period and Facility Transition

The notice reveals that Dr. Grewal had already served his suspension from May 19 to Nov. 19 during the BCCOHP’s investigation into the allegations. The Children’s Oral Care Centre, where Dr. Grewal practiced, is now under the management of Glow Pediatric Dentistry as of September 2023.

The BCCOHP received three complaints between April and July 2022, alleging “professional and ethical misconduct” of a sexual nature by Dr. Grewal towards female staff members. As a result, he was placed under investigation and agreed to restrictions on his clinic presence, with approval required by a “practice monitor.” However, the college received three more complaints, including failure to comply with the initial agreement.

Criminal Proceedings and Peace Bond

One of the sexual misconduct matters led to criminal proceedings, resulting in Dr. Grewal agreeing to a peace bond (restraining order) against him in March of the same year. The conditions of the peace bond included mandatory counselling sessions with a psychiatrist.

As part of the consent order with the BCCOHP, Dr. Grewal admitted to the “improper touching” of a female staff member without her consent on a single occasion. He acknowledged the unprofessional conduct of engaging in sexually charged communications and flirtatious behaviour with staff, as well as touching staff or patients without their consent, especially when such actions may be perceived as having a sexual intent.

In addition to the six-month suspension, Dr. Grewal is required to complete an ethics and boundaries course. He has been ordered to pay $2,000 in costs to the college. Moreover, the psychiatrist treating him must provide a report directly to the college following the completion of his treatment.

Practice Restrictions and Interim Order

The BCCOHP had issued an interim order earlier in the year, directing that Dr. Grewal not treat patients or communicate with clinic staff directly. However, another dentist could continue his practice under his supervision. Despite these provisions, Dr. Grewal was unable to find a replacement, leading to his absence from practice since May 19, 2023.
