Ireland: An inquest is being held at Dublin District Coroner’s Court in relation to the death of Margaret O’Doherty, a 72-year-old woman who passed away five days after a dental procedure to place implants.
The cause of death was a heart attack. The family’s attorney believes that, given her age and low weight, O’Doherty may have received too much of the sedative Midazolam during the treatment, which may have induced this sudden cardiac arrest.
Unclear if sedative sensitivity was known to dentists
The patient was described as being “very sensitive” to sedatives, but it is unclear if the dental surgeons who treated her were aware of this prior to the procedure. The patient’s husband, Michael O’Doherty, claims that her sedative intolerance was discussed with the clinic, but the clinic’s notes did not include reference to it.
Her dentists, Mr Rogers and Dr Fitzgerald, insist they were unaware of her sensitivity to sedatives. They claim they “would not have given sedatives” and that it would have “raised a large red flag” if they had known. The case is currently still under investigation.
