Decoding Dentist’s ‘Secret Codes’ during Check-Ups

A dentist has unveiled the mysterious “secret codes” often used during dental check-ups, shedding light on the cryptic language that might leave patients bewildered. While dentists strive to communicate in understandable terms, the intricacies of dental terminology can sometimes evade comprehension, leaving patients feeling perplexed about their oral health.

According to Dr. Onkar Mudhar, a London-based dentist, patients may feel puzzled by the numerical sequences uttered during examinations. “You come to see us, the dentists, and we poke around your gums and we save a few numbers,” said Dr. Mudhar. He explained that dentists utilize a “ball-ended” gum probe to assess the health of the gums gently, demystifying the process for patients.

Deciphering the Numbers

Dr. Mudhar clarified the meanings behind these codes, offering insight into their significance. “So, the best thing you can hear when your dentist is poking your gum is zero, which, according to Dr. Mudhar, means it’s ‘healthy’ as can be,” the dentist explained. He continued by detailing the implications of each number: “If you hear a number one, it means ‘you’ve got bleeding in the gaps, which is caused by inflammation’.”

Moving up the scale, Dr. Mudhar warned about the most concerning code: “The most concerning code is ‘four,’ signaling full-blown gum disease.” He emphasized the importance of seeking specialist treatment or intervention from a dentist to prevent the condition from progressing further.

Additionally, Dr. Mudhar addressed common misconceptions about dental probes, clarifying that any discomfort experienced during probing is due to gum inflammation rather than rough handling.

Encouraging Communication

Dr. Mudhar urged patients to communicate openly with their dentists, particularly if they feel lost in the dental dialogue or experience discomfort during the check-up. “If you do feel ‘lost in the code’ when chatting to your dentist,” Dr. Mudhar urged, “tell your dentist – especially if you’re in pain during the check-up and don’t know why.” Understanding the “secret codes” used by dentists empowers patients to actively participate in their dental care, fostering clearer communication and informed decision-making during check-ups.
