Dental Technology Startup Mimetrik Secures £2 Million in Seed Funding

UK: Mimetrik, a university spin-out founded in 2020 by experts from the University of Leeds Department of Digital Dentistry, has successfully closed a £2 million seed funding round. The company specialises in utilising cutting-edge 3D scanning technology to create digitised images of dental patients’ teeth and facial structure. This innovative approach aims to revolutionise the connection between dental labs and clinicians, ultimately benefiting patients.

Replacing Traditional Dental Models

Mimetrik’s technology, which incorporates machine learning, seeks to replace the costly and time-intensive process currently employed to create physical models of teeth. 

By doing so, the company promises faster and more accurate treatment for dental patients. The recent funding round, led by investor Northern Gritstone, will play a pivotal role in bringing Mimetrik’s core products to the market. These products encompass a combination of state-of-the-art software, hardware, and mobile applications.

Mimetrik’s founding team comprises seasoned experts in their respective fields. This includes Professor Andy Keeling, Dr. Alyn Morgan, Dr. Cecilie Osnes, and Professor David Wood. 

Collectively, they bring decades of experience in clinical dentistry, 3D scanning, computer science, and a deep understanding of the dental industry. Their extensive background includes collaborations with global dental manufacturers and contributions to national dental policy.

Tapping into the Digital Dentistry Market

With the new injection of funding, Mimetrik sets its sights on the rapidly growing digital dentistry market, which is projected to double in size to $1.8 billion by 2029. 

Dr. Alyn Morgan, one of Mimetrik’s co-founders, expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact of their products. Drawing from over 30 years of experience in clinical dentistry, he highlighted the significant time and cost savings that their technology can bring to the industry. The investment from Northern Gritstone signifies confidence in Mimetrik’s technology, and the company looks forward to leveraging their expertise as they continue to expand and introduce their products to the market.
