Dentist Cautions Against Daily Chewing Gum Habit

Dr. Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, has raised concerns about the potential dangers of a daily chewing gum habit, which he describes as “seemingly harmless.” According to Dr. Bozic, the artificial sweeteners found in many chewing gums can disrupt the delicate balance of the mouth’s microbiome, essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

“Many people are unaware of the detrimental effects of chewing gum containing artificial sweeteners on their oral health,” Dr. Bozic warned. “These sweeteners not only disrupt the delicate balance of the mouth’s microbiome, which is crucial for maintaining healthy teeth and gums, but they can also lead to digestive issues such as bloating.”

Fostering Harmful Bacteria Growth

Dr. Bozic further explained that regular chewing gum consumption could pave the way for harmful bacteria to thrive, potentially contributing to dental problems like cavities and gum disease. “The mouth is the gateway to the digestive system,” he cautioned, highlighting the potential domino effect on overall gut health.

“Disruptions in oral health can have a domino effect on gut health, potentially exacerbating conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and compromising overall wellbeing,” Dr. Bozic warned.

While acknowledging the desire to chew gum, Dr. Bozic recommends opting for xylitol-sweetened gum as a healthier alternative. “Xylitol-sweetened gum not only satisfies the urge to chew but also actively contributes to maintaining a healthy oral environment,” he explained.

“Its unique properties make it an excellent choice for individuals seeking to protect their teeth and gums without compromising on taste or convenience.”

Endorsement from Dental Associations

Dr. Bozic’s recommendation of xylitol-sweetened gum aligns with the endorsement of six national dental associations, which have approved the use of sugar-free chewing gum and candies containing xylitol for their oral health benefits.

“Making the switch to xylitol-sweetened gum is a simple yet impactful step towards preserving oral health and supporting overall wellbeing,” Dr. Bozic concluded.

While xylitol-sweetened gum may offer dental benefits, it’s essential to note that excessive consumption of sugar alcohols like xylitol can lead to digestive side effects such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. Moderation is key, as with any dietary choice.

As the debate around the potential risks and benefits of chewing gum continues, dental professionals like Dr. Bozic aim to raise awareness and encourage informed choices for maintaining optimal oral and overall health.
