INDIA: A dentist in Mumbai has been booked on charges of abetment to suicide and rape after a 17-year-old girl, who was reportedly working at his clinic, died by suicide on December 28, 2023. The girl’s family alleges that the dentist harassed and sexually exploited her, leading to this tragic incident.
Police Report and Postmortem
According to the police, the girl’s family claimed instances of harassment and sexual exploitation by the dentist. She was found hanging in the dental clinic, and an accidental death report (ADR) was initially registered. The preliminary postmortem report confirmed the cause of death as hanging.
The elder sister of the deceased filed a complaint with the police, accusing the dentist of rape, abuse, assault, and threats dating back to 2021. The family asserts that the relentless harassment and abuse were factors contributing to the girl’s decision to take her own life. An FIR was registered on Thursday night based on these allegations.
Victim’s Family Speaks Out
Speaking to The Indian Express, the girl’s eldest sister revealed that the deceased was a student who financially supported the family, consisting of her mother and another elder sister since their father passed away a few years ago. The elder sister stated, “She had been working at the doctor’s clinic since 2021. He would harass her and not allow her to go home till late at night. He would also abuse her over coming late to the clinic and assault her.”
A senior inspector leading the investigation mentioned, “We have registered an FIR on the family’s complaint. We are yet to get the detailed postmortem report. We have not made any arrest in the case and are verifying the family’s allegations. Further probe is on.”
The police have charged the dentist under sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 376 (rape), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, sections 4, 6, 8, and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) and relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act have been applied.
