Dentistry-Related Medication Cited in Fatal Crash

USA: A devastating traffic incident in Evans, Colorado has highlighted the critical importance of heeding medication warnings after dental procedures. The incident, which occurred on January 3, 2025, resulted in the death of 45-year-old Aubrey Pitts and serious injuries to her husband.

Patient’s Admission Regarding Dental Medication

The report indicates that Cody Riley, 28, admitted to authorities that he had been driving while under the influence of post-dental procedure numbing medication. According to the affidavit, Riley explicitly acknowledged his impaired state, stating, “I was kind of just disoriented coming out of the building and I knew I shouldn’t have drove… home.”
The Tribune article reveals that Riley was not only affected by dental numbing agents but was also taking Alprazolam (Xanax). When confronted about the medication’s warning label regarding operating vehicles, Riley reportedly dismissed these concerns, stating, “Yeah, that’s what they all say.” The combination of these medications appeared to significantly impact his driving ability.

Sequence of Events Leading to Fatality

The incident began with an initial collision on U.S. 85, followed by Riley attempting to flee the scene. According to the Tribune’s reporting, Riley ran multiple red lights and was observed weaving through traffic before the final, fatal collision at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and 37th Street.

The report indicates that Riley faces serious charges, including DUI causing vehicular homicide and vehicular eluding leading to death. The Tribune’s investigation revealed that this isn’t Riley’s first encounter with the law, as court records show previous convictions for driving offenses and other charges.

Impact on Community

The incident has deeply affected the Evans community, as evidenced by the significant response to a GoFundMe campaign established to support Walt Pitts’ recovery and honor Aubrey’s memory. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of following medical advice regarding driving after dental procedures.
