Disturbing Trend: Toothpaste as Aphrodisiac

GHANA: An alarming trend has emerged in Ghana where some women are resorting to the use of white toothpaste as an aphrodisiac and vagina-tightening agent, despite stern warnings from medical experts regarding its potential risks.

Vendors’ Perspective

At the Accra Central Market, vendors of aphrodisiacs and waist beads promote the use of white toothpaste for enhancing sexual experiences. Obaa Aku, a waist beads vendor, advocates for this practice, claiming it as a superior alternative to traditional cleansers. She asserts, “White toothpaste was a better option than lemons as a cleanser for the armpit, beneath the breast, ears, thighs and the anal region.”

Another vendor, Sister Ataa, shared her personal experience, stating that despite being 52 years old, she found the toothpaste sensation pleasurable and believed it enhanced her sexual encounters.

Reacting to this trend, Dr. Promise E. Sefogah, an Obstetrician Gynecologist at the Shape Healthcare Specialist Medical Centre in Accra, expressed grave concern. He cautioned against the use of toothpaste for such purposes, highlighting potential risks such as infertility and infections. Dr. Sefogah emphasized the prevalence of this practice, stating, “This practice has been an old practice even in other parts of the world, despite the dangers associated with the practice.”

Risks Involved

Dr. Sefogah outlined the potential risks associated with using toothpaste and other substances in the vaginal area, including irritation, disturbance in the acidic balance, and the development of infections that could lead to infertility and ectopic pregnancy. He warned that disrupting the acidic balance could result in bacterial overgrowth, leading to severe infections and complications.

Interestingly, while some toothpaste vendors claimed ignorance of this practice, others acknowledged its existence, with specific brands being favored for douching purposes. However, the majority reiterated the conventional use of toothpaste for dental hygiene alone, emphasizing their lack of awareness regarding its alternative applications.

This concerning trend underscores the importance of raising awareness about safe and hygienic practices related to intimate health. Medical professionals continue to advocate for caution and adherence to evidence-based approaches to maintain reproductive health and prevent potential complications.
