Doctolib Enhances Medical Appointments with AI Assistant

FRANCE: French healthcare technology company Doctolib is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) during medical appointments to alleviate administrative tasks, allowing doctors more time for patient interaction. The initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of medical consultations.

Doctolib’s Impactful Journey

Established in Paris in 2012, Doctolib has grown into one of France’s ‘unicorns,’ valued at almost €6 billion, with revenues of €300 million. Despite facing challenges in profitability due to continuous technological investments, the platform has become the fastest-growing healthcare startup in Europe. The service is now utilized by almost 80 million patients in France and Germany, expanding its reach into Italy.

Doctolib’s co-founder, Stanislas Niox-Chateau, highlights the company’s mission to alleviate the time constraints faced by medical practitioners.

“Our obsession is with saving doctors’ time. They all say they want to be freed up, so that’s our number one job,” he states. The platform collaborates with 22,000 GPs and various specialists, making it an integral part of the French healthcare system.

AI Assistant: Transforming Data Collection

In a significant development, Doctolib plans to launch an AI-powered medical assistant, currently in beta testing. This innovative assistant will operate during consultations, allowing doctors to open a microphone for AI to take notes. Mr. Niox-Chateau estimates that this will save doctors approximately five minutes of computer time during a consultation, fostering a more patient-focused interaction.

Explaining the role of AI in healthcare, Mr. Niox-Chateau emphasizes, “In healthcare, you have a lot of different unstructured data from patients, and at the same time, medical knowledge is changing fast, is fragmented and comes from many sources. AI will revolutionize this.” The AI assistant will codify and structure data, providing relevant information to practitioners at the right moment.

Enhanced Doctor-Patient Communication

The introduction of AI aims to address the issue of doctors spending a significant portion of their consultation time on computers. The AI assistant will allow doctors to focus on communicating with patients and conducting examinations, while also streamlining administrative tasks.

While currently focusing on France, Germany, and Italy, Doctolib has long-term aspirations for global expansion. While discussions with British doctors are underway, the company eyes a gradual entry into the US market, identifying opportunities in its healthcare system’s inefficiencies.

Doctolib places a strong emphasis on data security, having invested significantly in encryption technology. Mr. Niox-Chateau highlights the company’s commitment to maintaining the highest level of certification in Europe, ensuring ongoing efforts in data protection.

As Doctolib pioneers AI integration into medical appointments, the platform envisions a transformative impact on the efficiency of healthcare delivery, placing a renewed focus on doctor-patient relationships.
