DoT Issues Guidelines for Dental Tourism in the Philippines

THE PHILIPPINES: The Department of Tourism (DoT) has released comprehensive guidelines outlining the accreditation process for dental clinics to participate in promoting the country’s medical tourism.

This move is part of the DoT’s commitment to bolstering its Health and Wellness Program, considering dental tourism as a significant component deserving investment and promotion.

Key Requirements for Accreditation

The guidelines stipulate several minimum requirements for dental clinics seeking accreditation. These include maintaining cleanliness, ensuring a safe and secure location with natural ventilation, and providing essential amenities such as clean restrooms and a clinic concierge offering a range of dental procedures including cosmetic dentistry, dental implantology, orthodontics, endodontics, and prosthodontics.

In addition to clinical standards, the guidelines emphasize patient comfort and convenience. Dental clinics are required to have a manned reception area with adequate lighting, seating facilities, and access to tourist information or electronic access to the Philippines Travel App. Moreover, amenities such as drinking water, coffee, or tea must be readily available to enhance the patient experience.

Reinforcing Quality and Safety Standards

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco highlighted the importance of accreditation in ensuring quality, safety, and adherence to international standards. She emphasized that accreditation fosters trust among both local and international patients and provides assurance of government approval.

Frasco reiterated the DoT’s commitment to maintaining a national standard for licensing and accreditation, reinforcing operating quality and efficiency in line with international benchmarks.

Clinics interested in accreditation are required to submit various documentary requirements through the DoT Online Accreditation system. These include valid business permits, lists of dentists with PRC registration numbers, proof of ownership of essential equipment like autoclaves and dental x-rays, and certificates of membership with professional dental associations.

Expanding Dental Tourism Offerings

The memorandum also encompasses dental tour packages, which may include a range of dental procedures along with accommodations, transportation, sightseeing, and leisure activities. Secretary Frasco expressed confidence that combining quality dental services with tourism offerings would enhance the country’s appeal as a tourist destination.

Citing data from the Global Wellness Institute, the DoT highlighted the Philippines’ significant ranking in the Wellness Economy, both regionally and globally. This positioning underscores the country’s potential to attract wellness-conscious travelers seeking high-quality dental services amidst a backdrop of natural beauty and cultural richness.

The issuance of these guidelines marks a significant step in positioning the Philippines as a premier destination for dental tourism, aligning with broader efforts to enhance the country’s healthcare and tourism sectors.
