DRA DIGEST: February, 2024 edition

Welcome to DRA DIGEST — the Newsletter of Dental Resource Asia (DRA).

Dear DRA Digest Community,

In recent years, a concerning trend has been on the rise – the surge of do-it-yourself (DIY) dentistry. What once may have seemed like harmless experimentation has evolved into a dangerous practice with far-reaching consequences. Dental professionals and healthcare providers are increasingly alarmed by the proliferation of DIY dental procedures, driven not only by financial constraints but also by the accessibility of instructional videos and at-home kits.

The recent warning from the New Zealand Dental Association’s Chief Executive, Dr. Mo Amso, sheds light on the severity of this issue. Financial limitations often force individuals to resort to at-home dental procedures as they struggle to afford professional care. However, the consequences of DIY dentistry can be dire, leading to irreversible damage and heightened risks of infections. Dr. Amso’s comparison of using non-sterile tools for dental work to self-surgery with inadequate instruments underscores the absurdity and danger of this trend.

As healthcare providers, it is our responsibility to educate the public about the risks associated with DIY dentistry and emphasise the importance of seeking professional help. The New Zealand Dental Association’s call to prioritise professional advice and assistance over DIY practices echoes across borders. Let us work collectively to ensure that everyone has access to safe, affordable, and quality dental care. Together, we can safeguard the oral health of our communities and prevent the proliferation of harmful DIY trends.

Best Regards,

Camille,
