Rethinking Opioids in Dentistry

Dentists are among the top prescribers of opioids in the U.S., with nearly 9 million prescriptions issued in 2022, often for procedures like wisdom tooth removal. However, a recent study from Rutgers University suggests that over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen may outperform opioids in managing post-surgical dental pain. The study, involving over 1,800 patients, found that this non-opioid combination provided better pain relief and improved recovery outcomes.

While these findings challenge current prescribing norms, controversy remains. Critics argue that more research is needed to confirm the results and address potential limitations, such as patients with medical conditions that restrict the use of non-opioid alternatives. Additionally, data on prescription misuse in the Asia-Pacific region is scarce, making it unclear whether similar risks exist elsewhere.

The Rutgers study highlights the need for caution and further investigation. Until more evidence emerges, adopting conservative prescribing practices and exploring safer alternatives could help reduce opioid reliance. As lead author Cecile Feldman noted, “These studies guide us,” but the dental community must balance innovation with careful consideration of patient needs. More research is essential to fully understand the implications and refine pain management strategies globally.
