Against the Rising Tide of Cyber Attacks
Dear DRA Digest Community,
A new threat looms large over our practices in the ominous form of cybersecurity breaches. Recent reports paint an alarming picture, with over 1.2 million patient records compromised in 2024 alone. As dental professionals, we must recognize that our practices are no longer just custodians of oral health, but also guardians of sensitive patient data. The vulnerabilities in our sector are stark. Many dental practices rely on third-party technology without robust security controls, making us attractive targets for cybercriminals.
However, we are not defenseless. Here are key steps every dental practice should consider:
- Implement basic cybersecurity controls, such as those outlined in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ cybersecurity performance goals.
- Invest in an Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solution to monitor and protect your systems.
- Regularly update all systems and software to patch vulnerabilities.
- Train staff on cybersecurity best practices, especially regarding email security to prevent phishing attacks.
- Scrutinize third-party vendors and ensure they meet stringent security standards.
- Keep antivirus software active and updated.
As dental professionals, our commitment to patient care must extend beyond the chair to the digital realm. By taking proactive steps to enhance our cybersecurity postures, we can continue to provide excellent care while safeguarding the trust our patients place in us.
Until next time,
