New Gum Health Questionnaire Aims to Improve Patient-Centred Care
In a bid to enhance patient-centred care in the realm of dentistry, a group of researchers has developed and psychometrically validated a comprehensive questionnaire specifically aimed at capturing a wide spectrum of impacts related to gum health.
The novel “Gum Health Experience Questionnaire” (GHEQ) offers an invaluable tool for understanding and improving the quality of life of individuals dealing with gum-related symptoms and conditions.
The Path to the GHEQ
The development of the GHEQ followed a meticulously crafted multi-stage approach rooted in a robust theoretical model. Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews, pilot testing, and cross-sectional analysis within a general population comprising 152 individuals to assess the questionnaire’s psychometric properties. Additionally, a subsample of 27 participants contributed to test–retest reliability assessments.
The psychometric analysis unveiled strong support for the validity and reliability of the GHEQ’s impact scale. The questionnaire displayed excellent internal reliability, with item-total correlations of nearly all items exceeding 0.4. Cronbach’s alpha values for subscales ranged from 0.84 to 0.91, further confirming the robustness of the measure. Test–retest reliability also performed exceptionally well, with an Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) ranging from 0.91 to 0.97 for subscales.
Content and Construct Validity
The GHEQ demonstrated good content validity, indicated by the wide standard deviations observed in item and total scores. It also showcased strong construct validity, with notable correlations ranging from 0.54 to 0.73 concerning the global gum health rating for subscales, all of which were statistically significant.
The significance of this new questionnaire lies in its ability to address the oral health-related quality of life across the full spectrum of gum-related symptoms and everyday impacts. The GHEQ promises to be an indispensable evaluative tool for both clinical and research settings, filling a void that previously existed in assessing gum health.
The Road Ahead
While the GHEQ shows substantial promise, researchers acknowledge that further validation, revision, and reduction in the number of items are needed to ensure its full potential. The long-term goal is to refine the questionnaire to provide a more patient-centered approach to evaluating and improving gum health-related quality of life. The journey ahead includes conducting longitudinal studies to solidify the measure’s evaluative properties.
This pioneering endeavour serves as a remarkable leap towards understanding and addressing the multifaceted aspects of gum health, ultimately leading to better patient care in the field of dentistry.
