AFGHANISTAN: In a comprehensive cross-sectional study conducted from September to December 2022 at Kabul University of Medical Sciences, researchers explored the oral health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of health professions’ students.

This initiative aimed to provide critical insights into the dental care practices of young Afghans and pave the way for effective public health awareness programs.

Surveying Health Professions’ Students

The study involved 496 health professions’ students, aged 18–25, from five colleges of health and medical-related disciplines at Kabul University of Medical Sciences.

Researchers employed a detailed questionnaire containing 30 items, adapted from previous studies, to assess participants’ oral health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours.

Among the noteworthy findings, 44.5% of participants brushed their teeth twice a day, 41.3% once a day, and 9.31% more than twice a day. Strikingly, 91% were aware of the significance of routine dental visits, and 51.3% visited the dentist when experiencing pain.

The majority (94%) believed that brushing prevents dental decay, while 93% agreed that fluoride strengthens teeth, and 96% acknowledged the detrimental effect of sweets on dental health.
