INDIA: The Union textiles ministry in New Delhi is spearheading an initiative aimed at revolutionizing dental implant technology. In a bid to reduce costs associated with dental implants, the ministry is working on the development of a fabric-based tooth to replace conventional implants made from ceramics, polymers, and composites. This endeavor, as disclosed by two informed sources, entails leveraging dental resins made from polyester to restore and replace tooth structure.
The ambitious project involves collaboration between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), which will conduct extensive research to develop the technology. The process will undergo rigorous testing, including clinical trials on humans, to ensure efficacy and safety.
Long-term Investment and Strategic Planning
“The project is very costly and will take at least five years to develop a prototype,” remarked one source familiar with the matter. The ministry’s plan emphasizes consultation with stakeholders and strategic planning to navigate the complexities involved in developing such innovative dental solutions.
The development of fabric-based teeth falls under the ambit of the National Technical Textiles Mission, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing medical textiles. With an increased allocation of funds for the mission, the government aims to accelerate research and development in this critical area.
Former president of Dental Council of India, Dr. Dibyendu Mazumdar, lauded the initiative, emphasizing its potential to make India self-reliant in the tooth implant segment. However, Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma, head of the dental department at NIMS Dental College and Hospital, raised concerns regarding the feasibility of fabric-based implants, suggesting the need for combining fabric with metal for enhanced strength and longevity.
Market Dynamics
The dental implants market is witnessing significant growth, driven by increasing demand for cosmetic dentistry and technological advancements. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, the global market for dental implants was valued at $9.27 billion in 2022, with a forecasted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.95% to reach $18.42 billion by 2030. This underscores the importance of innovation in dental implant technology to address oral health needs worldwide.
