FDI cancels 2022 World Dental Congress

The FDI World Dental Federation announced that the 2022 World Dental Congress originally scheduled to be held in Mumbai, India from 29 September – 2 October has been cancelled.

According to an official statement released by FDI, the Indian Dental Association (IDA) has pulled out from organising the global event as the congress co-host.

Due to insufficient capacity and resources to organise the congress without their co-host and owing to the limited time leading up to the congress, FDI decided to cancel the event.

The cancellation marks only the third time since 1901 that FDI had suspended hosting the annual World Dental Congress. The event was previously suspended due to the two world wars between 1915 and 1920 as well as between 1940 and 1945.

Nevertheless, the FDI World Dental Parliament will continue to take place as in-person events, including all business meetings, said the organisers. Further information, will be shared in due course.

In 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic saw FDI and the American Dental Association cancel or postpone most of the dental events held in San Francisco. The 2021 congress was held virtually for the first time also due to the pandemic.

The next World Dental Congress is scheduled to take place in 2023.
