The FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) has launched a Toolkit for Sustainable Dentistry that the global dental body says could serve as a guide for dentists to make their work more environmentally sustainable.
As well as guide dental practices on the appropriate actions for environmentally sustainable dental work, the Toolkit is also designed to help them track their progress through recognition awards they could achieve along the way.
By supplying dental practices with the tools and knowhow, FDI hopes to make tangible contributions towards reducing the environmental impact of the profession,
Notably, this follows up the FDI Consensus Statement on Environmentally Sustainable Oral Healthcare that the organization released earlier this year. The Statement outlines the challenges and solutions to improving sustainability in dentistry and recognizes the responsibility of the oral healthcare sector to provide environmentally sustainable care – without compromising patient welfare.
“Dentists and dental teams can play an active role in reducing the environmental impact of dentistry, while safeguarding optimal patient care. This online Toolkit for Sustainable Dentistry is a step towards helping dental practices adopt measures to reduce their carbon footprint.” said Prof Ihsane Ben Yahya, FDI President.
“I hope that our work today will have a positive impact on our future generations so that they can enjoy a healthy life and planet.”
Developed as part of FDI’s Sustainability in Dentistry project, the Toolkit consists of an interactive platform that guides the user’s activities – via practical solutions and tips – along a sustainable path.
By taking on different sets of challenges on the interactive platform, dentists and their team members can earn recognition awards – bronze, silver, or gold – for their practice. The interactive challenges are designed to supply the dental teams the sustainability tools to raise awareness, implement changes towards and become more aware about their environment. This global initiative is open dental organizations and practices around the world.
With a membership comprising around 200 national dental associations and specialist groups in over 130 countries, FDI World Dental Federation is an August body that represents one million dentists worldwide.
Targeting practitioners, patients, and the supply chain itself, FDI’s Sustainability in Dentistry project was established to motivate and inspire commitment to reduce the collective CO2 footprint of dentistry.
