Government Dental College in Indore Addresses Compliance Issues for PG Seats

Dental Council of India Conducts Inspection for Postgraduate Programmes

INDIA: The Government College of Dentistry in Indore, Madhya Pradesh’s sole state-run dental institution, has recently submitted compliance reports to the Dental Council of India (DCI) for the third consecutive year. These reports address various shortcomings identified during a recent inspection, as the college seeks to retain its postgraduate seats in three key specialities.

Postgraduate Courses Under Scrutiny

The college, which received permission to initiate postgraduate courses in prosthodontics and crown & bridge, oral & maxillofacial surgery, and orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics two years ago, is now under review for continuation of these programmes for the 2025-2026 academic session. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s initial approval is now subject to DCI’s assessment of the college’s compliance with regulatory standards.

Deficiencies Highlighted by DCI

During its executive committee meeting following an inspection in early August, the DCI raised several concerns about the college’s facilities and staffing. The inspection report highlighted multiple areas requiring attention, including:

  • Shortage of faculty, specifically one professor and two readers
  • Inadequate faculty rooms and clinical spaces
  • Insufficient seminar rooms and dental chairs
  • Substandard hostel conditions
  • Overcrowded faculty accommodations
  • Lack of bio-medical waste management certification
  • Expired registration of the ethical committee

College’s Response to Compliance Requirements

Dr Sandhya Jain, the principal of the Dental College, responded to these concerns with optimism. She stated, “Our new buildings have been recently inaugurated and we have started shifting as well. We have adequate strength of professors and staff as per DCI requirement. I hope we will not face any problem in receiving approval for retaining seats.”

Importance of Compliance for Future of Dental Education

The submission of these compliance reports is crucial for the college to maintain its postgraduate seats. The DCI’s decision will significantly impact the future of dental education in the region, as the Government College of Dentistry plays a vital role in training dental specialists in Madhya Pradesh.

Looking Ahead

As the dental community awaits the DCI’s verdict, the college’s administration appears confident in their ability to address the identified issues. The outcome of this compliance review will be closely watched by aspiring dental postgraduate students and the broader medical education sector in India.
