Green Party Launches Campaign to Address Oral Health Inequity in Aotearoa

NEW ZEALAND: The Green Party is initiating a campaign, urging individuals to share their experiences of managing oral health care in Aotearoa. The campaign aims to shed light on the challenges faced by many in accessing essential dental care, particularly due to cost constraints.

Green Party health spokesperson Ricardo Menéndez March advocates for universal access to crucial healthcare services, including dental care. He emphasizes that everyone in Aotearoa should have the opportunity to seek dental treatment when needed. Unfortunately, a significant portion of Kiwis finds themselves unable to afford dental care, leading to postponement of vital dental appointments.

Alarming Disparities in Access

According to estimates, approximately 40 percent of adults in Aotearoa struggle to cover the costs of dental care. This figure is even higher for Māori and Pasifika communities, where the proportion exceeds 50 percent. Such disparities in accessing oral health care are evident and raise concerns about fairness in the healthcare system.

The repercussions of limited access to dental care can be severe, causing individuals to endure extreme pain and discomfort. Moreover, untreated dental issues can contribute to other health problems, making the need for equitable access to oral health care all the more critical.

Sharing Stories to Drive Change

The Green Party is inviting thousands of people from across Aotearoa to share their personal experiences of navigating dental care challenges. Many individuals have found themselves depleting their savings, borrowing money, or postponing dental treatment due to financial barriers. By sharing their stories, people can play a vital role in addressing the inequities in oral health care.

Ricardo Menéndez March urges the public to participate in the campaign, considering it a significant step toward rectifying the current disparities in oral health care in Aotearoa. The Green Party aims to amplify these voices, highlighting the urgency of accessible dental healthcare for all citizens.

As the campaign unfolds, the Green Party seeks to bring attention to this pressing issue and work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive oral health care system in Aotearoa.
