StarAligners has released Illumina, an innovative orthodontic product that features three wavelengths of light.

According to the company, the three distinct wavelengths are able to enhance gum health, increase circulation, and provide teeth whitening and photobiomodulation (PBM). The three wavelengths of light include: 450nm Blue (for teeth whitening); 600nm Red (for gum health); and 850nm Near infrared (for facilitating tooth movement).

The Illumina is said to assist in reducing treatment time on clear aligner therapy using near-infrared light. Mitochondrial enzymes can absorb photons from light and increase the production of Adenosine 5 – the triphosphate ATP energy allows the tissues to metabolize normally. ATP production has been shown to be up-regulated two-fold by infrared light, also known as photobiomodulation.

The Illumina Oral Therapy device uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the infrared and red spectrums. This helps to increase circulation and enhance gum health, says StarAligners. In addition, the non-UV blue lights aid in tooth stains removal by increasing the effectiveness of whitening gels. For example, it is said to remove tannin stains from coffee, tea, and wine.

The device comes with a 1.7oz bottle of StarAligners Teeth Whitener & Aligner Cleaner foam, which has been specially formulated to work with Illumina.
