India’s Union Health Minister Proposes New Era in Dental Education

INDIA: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya (pictured) has announced the implementation of the Dental Commission Act, aimed at revolutionizing dental education to make it more practical, affordable, and transparent. Speaking at the inauguration of the new headquarters of the National Dental Commission (NDC), Mandaviya emphasized the transformative impact of the act on dental education and administration.

Efforts Towards Practicality, Affordability, and Transparency

Through the Dental Commission Act, the government seeks to enhance dental education by promoting practical learning, ensuring affordability, and introducing transparency across the system. Mandaviya underscored the government’s commitment to providing patients with accessible and high-quality dental treatment while simultaneously improving the educational landscape for aspiring dentists.

As part of the initiative, Mandaviya inaugurated the National Dental Register (NDR) under the National Health Digital Mission. The NDR aims to provide transparency in dental practice by offering Unique Identification (DCI-ID) to all practicing dentists in India, verified by state dental councils.

This move is aligned with the ‘One Nation One Register’ vision, ensuring citizens have access to verified dental professionals.

Strengthening the Nursing Workforce

In addition to dental reforms, Mandaviya highlighted the government’s efforts to bolster the nursing workforce and address healthcare disparities across regions. As part of this initiative, foundation stones were laid for three nursing colleges in Andhra Pradesh and one in Jammu and Kashmir. Mandaviya emphasized the importance of establishing nursing colleges co-located with existing medical colleges to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

Acknowledging the increasing demand for trained Indian nurses abroad, the government has incorporated foreign language courses into medical education institutes. Mandaviya noted that this addition provides students with additional advantages, enabling them to seize opportunities in the international healthcare sector.
