Iowa Dentist Surrenders License Amid Allegations of Misconduct

USA: Dr. Calvin Weber, a 65-year-old dentist from Glenwood, Iowa, has agreed to surrender his dental license following allegations of sexual misconduct with multiple patients. The Iowa Dental Board took action in December, declaring Weber an “imminent threat to public safety” and suspending his license on an emergency basis. This decision came in the wake of criminal charges filed against Weber for assaulting a female outside his office.

According to police records, a woman reported to Glenwood police in July 2023 that while in Weber’s dental office, he made inappropriate remarks about her appearance and proceeded to grab her buttocks.

The incident escalated when Weber followed her outside and made further advances. Subsequently, Weber was charged with assault, a simple misdemeanor, and was found guilty by a judge in December, resulting in a fine of $855.

History of Allegations

This isn’t the first time Weber has faced allegations of misconduct. Dating back to July 1993, he was charged with unprofessional conduct after allegedly inappropriately touching two female patients during their dental appointments, one of whom was a minor.

Following these charges, additional allegations emerged, including claims from a sedated patient who accused Weber of touching her inappropriately and later engaging in consensual sexual activity.

As a result of these allegations, the Iowa Dental Board suspended Weber’s license indefinitely and mandated a psychiatric evaluation for reinstatement consideration. However, Weber opted to surrender his license in April 1994. He later moved to Florida and worked as a golf professional. It wasn’t until December 2006, after undergoing evaluation and therapy, that the board agreed to reinstate Weber’s dental license.

Renewed Concerns and Surrender

The recent allegations against Weber have reignited concerns about his conduct with patients, prompting the surrender of his license.

The Iowa Dental Board’s decisive action reflects the seriousness with which allegations of misconduct are treated within the profession. This case underscores the importance of maintaining the highest ethical standards and ensuring patient safety within dental practices.
