MALAYSIA: In a proactive move aimed at improving the well-being of the Orang Asli community, the Kelantan government has announced plans to provide targeted health information. This initiative seeks to empower the community with knowledge on cultivating healthy living practices, including essential aspects such as nutrition and dental health.
The state’s Local Government, Housing, Health, and Environment Committee chairman, Hilmi Abdullah, highlighted one of the key programs in place, known as the Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS). This program, tailored for Pos Gob in Gua Musang, is envisioned as a platform to support the broader Healthy Malaysia 2030 agenda.
Addressing Nutritional and Dental Health
Emphasizing the critical importance of nutrition and dental health, Hilmi Abdullah noted that a significant portion of the Orang Asli community faces malnutrition challenges, rendering them vulnerable to diseases, particularly those transmitted through vectors such as rats and flies.
“In our efforts to assist this group in terms of health, we will also provide health check-ups and medicines through periodical visits,” Hilmi Abdullah stated during the ANMS Tour launch and the establishment of the MyCHAMPION among the Pos Gob Orang Asli Community program in Dataran Cintawangsa Kuala Krai.
The Role of MyCHAMPION
As part of this initiative, the MyCHAMPION program has been established to serve as a conduit for disseminating essential health and social information to local communities. MyCHAMPION functions as a platform for appointing two Orang Asli ambassadors or volunteers who will play a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of health care within the community.
Hilmi Abdullah explained, “MyCHAMPION is a program for us to appoint two Orang Asli ambassadors (volunteers) so that they are aware of the need to take care of health.”
The Kelantan government’s proactive approach in delivering focused health information and support to the Orang Asli community underscores its commitment to improving their overall well-being and quality of life.
This initiative aligns with broader national health goals and is poised to make a positive impact in addressing health challenges faced by this unique community.
