Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Recalled Over Potential Dental Risks

USA: Tesco has issued a recall for Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Chocolate Flavour cereal, warning consumers of a potential choking hazard or risk of dental damage.

The supermarket giant has urged shoppers to check their cupboards for the affected product and dispose of it immediately. The recall applies to 450g boxes of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Chocolate Flavour with best before dates ranging from December 6, 2024, to April 28, 2025.

Quality Defect

The recall was prompted by a quality defect identified by Kellanova, formerly known as Kellogg Company and the manufacturer of Kellogg’s cereals in Europe. According to the company, “a small proportion of boxes could contain hard lumps of cereal that do not break down when eaten with milk.”

Kellanova acknowledged that these hard lumps “could potentially cause dental damage or be a choking hazard,” prompting the voluntary recall.

“Making good food which is safe and high quality is our number one priority at Kellanova,” a spokesperson said. “Clusters of cereal forming during production can be a normal occurrence and these usually break up when eaten or placed in milk. But, when we spotted that hard lumps of cereal were forming in a very small amount of our new Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Chocolate Flavour cereal, we took the decision to recall all products.”

Consumer Advice

Consumers in possession of the affected product are advised to dispose of it and contact Kellanova for a refund. The company has set up an online portal for customers to submit inquiries and receive guidance on reimbursement procedures.

“Kellanova is asking consumers to check their cupboards and if they have a box of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Chocolate Flavour cereal, please dispose of it,” the company stated. “Consumers can contact the Kellanova Customer Care team online here with any questions on what to do and how to receive reimbursement.”

Regulatory Compliance

Kellanova has notified the relevant regulatory authorities about the issue and is working closely with them to address the situation. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has provided guidance on product withdrawals and recalls, emphasizing the importance of ensuring consumer safety.

“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk,” the FSA explained. “When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”

The recall is limited to Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Chocolate Flavour cereal and does not affect the original Kellogg’s Corn Flakes or any other Kellogg’s products.
