MACAU: The Health Bureau (SSM) of Macau has announced an expansion of its denture fitting program, lowering the minimum age requirement from 70 to 65 years old. This move aims to provide subsidized denture fittings to a wider range of financially disadvantaged seniors, improving their dental care and overall quality of life.
Gradual Expansion Since Program’s Launch in 2019
The denture fitting program was launched in 2019 by the Health Bureau in collaboration with local non-profit medical institutions. Initially, the program offered subsidies to eligible individuals aged 80 and above. In subsequent phases, the minimum age requirement was progressively lowered, first to 75 in 2020, then to 70 in 2022, and now to 65 years old.
According to the bureau’s statement, they have begun informing senior citizens between the ages of 65 and 69 who are receiving financial support from the government about this latest measure. Those who are eligible and wish to join the program will be offered appointments at the Department of Stomatology of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre (CHCSJ) for an initial dental assessment.
“The programme aims to subsidise the fittings of dentures for those aged 65 and above who face financial difficulties, in order to give them better dental care and improve their quality of life,” the Health Bureau stated.
Denture Fitting and Follow-up Care
After the initial assessment, eligible beneficiaries will be referred to local non-profit medical institutions for the fitting of their dentures. Once the dentures have been fitted, the recipients will receive regular check-ups at the public hospital.
