The bacteria self-checking microscope known as mil-kin︎ uses smartphones to function as a high-magnification (1,000x optical) portable microscope that does not require focus adjustment.
By using a smartphone, there is no need to look through the eyepiece and observation can be made on the large screen of the smartphone.
The company recommends a wide variety of applications, particularly in the dental; food; sterilization and cleaning; and education industries.
Real-time detection of microorganisms – using a smartphone
Until now, microbes have been observed and checked in specific places such as laboratories or by specific people. With mil-kin, it is now possible to detect and observe microorganisms in real-time without the need for fancy equipment.
Being able to spot “microorganisms” and “dirt” instantaneously allows users of this portable microscope to easily detect various microbial risks in advance and avoid risks.
Features of mil-kin include:
- No preparation required (use only cover glass for C-type)
- Fixed focus
- Allows observation and recording using smartphone screen
- Energy saving function with LED indication
- Uses 2 AA batteries to operate
- Same as optical microscope, 0.5μm〜200μm
Easy to use – even for first-timers
To use, simply place your smartphone with screen facing upwards on the flat horizontal surface and squeeze a drop of the liquid into the observation well located directly under the microscope lens.
The screen of the smartphone will display what the magnifying lens is observing.
There are two types of mil-kin models: standard type and the C-type, which is recommended for dental users.
Dental application of the mil-kin portable microscope
According to a press release by the product’s namesake company, periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis affect approximately 3.5 billion people worldwide, collectively making gum-related ailments the most common disease in the world – as certified by Guinness World Records in 2001.
Periodontal disease also affects more than two-thirds of the Japanese population, aged between 30 and 79.
With mil-kin, it’s easy to help patients visualize the oral bacteria chairside.
Just place the plaque sampled with the interdental brush on the cover glass. Since no focus adjustment is required, even first-time users can easily observe the microscopic bacteria.
Easy storage and sharing
For storage and sharing of data, users can access the mil-kin platform, a web-based software application that only requires WIFI connection to function regardless of device. All data are stored and managed in the cloud server, which helps to save time and money by eliminating the need for a complicated filing system.
mil-kin Co., Ltd. will be exhibiting the bacteria self-checking microscope at the Industrial Exchange Exhibition 2022 Tokyo Venture Technology Award Zone.
