Patient Awarded £10,000 After Dental Practice Failures Impact Smile

UK: Farzana Master, a 47-year-old woman from South London, has been awarded £10,000 in an out-of-court settlement after experiencing severe complications resulting from multiple failed dental surgeries at Vara Dental Practice in Manor Park.

Under the care of Dr. Amit Rana and Dr. Jagjivan L Vara between 2005 and 2018, Ms. Master underwent two root canal treatments, crowns, and fillings.

Errors in Root Canal and Crown Treatments

According to the Dental Law Partnership, errors in root canal and crown treatments, specifically at the upper left and lower right corners of Ms. Master’s mouth, led to excruciating pain, infection, and loss of bone. The impact of these errors eventually necessitated the extraction of the affected teeth.

Patient Recounts Throbbing Pain

Ms. Master recalled the immense throbbing pain, spreading to her head, around New Year’s 2020. Despite frantic efforts to secure an emergency appointment, she faced challenges due to the holiday season. Eventually, she received antibiotics to alleviate the pain after a diagnosis revealed an infection stemming from a previous root canal treatment.

Impact on Confidence and Treatment Delays

The errors had a profound negative impact on Ms. Master’s confidence, particularly as her smile was compromised. Seeking opinions from various dental practices, she faced the possibility of tooth extraction and was informed about decay that had not been initially diagnosed, affecting surrounding teeth.

After contacting the Dental Law Practice in 2021, Ms. Master’s solicitors found evidence of failed root canal treatments, substandard crowns, and a failure to diagnose decay promptly during her time at Vara Dental Practice. The case was successfully settled in April 2023, with Ms. Master receiving £10,000 in compensation.

In response to the claims, Dr. Vara stated, “I would like to make it clear that I do not agree with the facts as conveyed by the Dental Law Partnership.” He emphasized his commitment to patient confidentiality and expressed pride in providing the highest standards of treatment.
